More About Sculls
Sculling boats are specialist rowing craft designed to move efficiently through the water using two oars, or sculls, operated by each rower. At the racing end of the sport these boats are extremely light, narrow and fast, with very little unnecessary hull width or weight.
Browse current sculls for sale on DinghyMart, or explore the wider rowing and paddling craft section.
Single Sculls
The single scull is perhaps the purest form of competitive rowing craft. One rower uses two sculls while sitting on a sliding seat, allowing the legs, body and arms to contribute to each stroke. Racing shells are long and exceptionally narrow, reducing drag and allowing impressive speeds in experienced hands.
That narrow hull also means they require balance and technique. A racing single scull is therefore very different from a conventional recreational rowing boat.
Training and Recreational Sculls
Not every sculling boat is an uncompromising racing shell. Training and recreational designs can use wider, more stable hulls while retaining the sliding-seat and two-oar rowing arrangement. These can be useful for rowers who want the efficiency and exercise of sculling without the demands of a full racing boat.
What to Check When Buying a Used Scull
Condition is particularly important with lightweight rowing shells. Inspect the hull carefully for cracks, dents, soft areas and previous repairs. Check the bow and stern, seat tracks, sliding seat, foot stretcher and all fittings.
The outriggers should be straight and securely attached and the gates should operate smoothly without excessive wear. If sculls are included in the sale, inspect their shafts, blades, collars and handles separately.
Transporting and Storing a Scull
Length rather than weight is often the greatest practical consideration. Racing shells can be surprisingly light but require considerable storage space and appropriate roof-rack or trailer arrangements. Before buying, make sure you have somewhere suitable to keep the boat and a practical way of getting it to and from the water.
Scull or Conventional Rowing Boat?
If your priority is fitness, technique or performance rowing, a scull can be enormously rewarding. For relaxed outings, carrying passengers, fishing or use as a yacht tender, a conventional rowing boat or tender will normally be much more practical.
